old Welcome page to the Harrogate Choral Society

HCS is a high standard, mixed voice, open age choir, that performs a variety of concerts in the Harrogate area. We are open to new members with or without previous singing experience, who want to perform with a leading choir.
THE HARROGATE PROMS !
For the last two years, members of the Harrogate Choral Society & Harrogate Symphony Orchestra have been working hard to organise a one off ‘event' - ‘The Harrogate Proms’.

The concert has been postponed until Saturday 26th June 2021 and will take place in Harrogate’s prime performing venue, the Convention Centre. It will be compered by BBC’s very own Harry Gration. The concert has been specially designed to be a wonderful evening of music for the audience whilst including some of the best of all choral music for singers. At the same time, the concert will be raising funds for The Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity and promises to be a truly spectacular event.

Additional singers from other choirs across the region have already signed up to create a huge choir under the banner ‘Voices for Harrogate’. Rehearsals dates for for the event will announced in early 2021, they will take place with HCS on Wednesday evenings. There will be a joint rehearsal with the HSO at King James's School at a date near to the concert.

The programme includes a wide variety of music including Orff’s O Fortuna, the Suite from Jenkin’s The armed Man, Grand March from Verdi’s Aida, Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Look at the World by Rutter, the Polovtsian Dances by Borodin and the usual ‘Proms’ favourites including Rule Britannia and Sea Songs.

To complete this large choir, we need more singers, especially tenors and basses, ideally who can read music and would be available to attend a minimum of six rehearsals.  If you are an individual or part of a choir already and would like to sing in this amazing event please get in touch with us.

Harrogate Choral Society Welcomes New Members

If you are an experienced singer, you will recognise that we sing to a high standard, and we welcome new members into all of our sections. If you are a novice singer, interested in the challenge of learning how to sing, we will coach you to this level in a surprisingly short period of time.

An Evening of Elgar
Spirit of England
Music Makers
& Sea Pictures

Featuring three well loved works by Elgar - The Spirit of England  - written by Elgar at a time when he was greatly affected by suffering caused by the First World War he captures the sadness without becoming maudlin; Sea Pictures  - the very first work composed by Elgar after he completed his Enigma Variations which includes a song with lyrics by his wife Alice; and Music Makers - his last substantial work for choir and orchestra in which he clothes the words in unmistakable passion, and they are enhanced by the detailed and masterly orchestral comment. This will be a fine evening of great music.

Soloists for the evening will be Samantha Hay, Soprano; and Gaynor Keeble, Mezzo Soprano. Harrogate Choral Society will be accompanied by the Amici Ensemble and conducted by the HCS Music Director Andrew Padmore.
